Opera/Jazz Fusion – Some of Nelson’s well known jazz instrumentalists join forces with singer/pianist Jason Balla (Festival Music and Artistic Director).

In this more casual setting we get to hear some operatic favourites by Puccini and Mozart given a lighter jazz treatment as well as hearing some authentic jazz opera by Gershwin and Weill.

A range of piano, trumpet, guitar and voice will be sure to get you in the right mood at this NBS Live Lounge, during the Nelson Civic Choir's 4-day opera festival.

The Chroma Chamber Choir is proud to stage a world premiere of the Gloria by New Zealand-Hungarian composer and jazz pianist Gabor Tolnay. Nelson-based Tolnay’s Gloria is composed in seven movements and contains a mix of traditional and jazz chords, as well as lyric melodies.

In 2022 a world premiere of his Symphony 2019 in the Auckland Town Hall was lauded in the New Zealand Herald: “In the hands of the full orchestra, its forceful musical expression quickly attracted the audience’s full attention. The composition demonstrated urge, purpose and beauty.”

Faure’s beautiful Requiem will be the centrepiece of this concert. It is one of the most often performed choral works, thanks to its marvelous melodies and lush romantic harmonies.

In the first half, Chroma will also perform the composer’s Cantique de Jean Racine and the well-known hymn Hear My Prayer by German composer Felix Mendelssohn.

Māpua Community Choir joins with the Nelson Jazz Club Big Band for an evening of jazz, swing and popular music. This is a rare opportunity for an evening of live jazz in the Māpua community.

Expect to have your toes tapping and to be taken on a sentimental journey, revisiting some of the great tunes and songs of the 20th century. Māpua Community Choir is led by musical director, John Botting, and enjoys performing for local events a range of harmony and unison songs from through the ages.

The jazz band is Nelson's premier swing style big band, specialising in music from the 1930s to 50s and featuring some of the region's leading jazz musicians. The band is led by Graeme Nicholas.
